Harriet Anne and Felicity Kate – 2nd July 2012
We had the surprise of our lives when we
discovered on 3rd May that we were having twins, that day set us on our roller
coaster journey that would change our lives forever.
Our girls were monochorionic diamnioctic
twins, meaning they were identical with one placenta and two amniotic
sacks. This type of twins comes
with a number of challenges and possible difficulties and we had many of those.
At 16 weeks we were referred to Kings
College for weekly scans as we were showing early signs of Twin To Twin
Transfusion, where one twin’s blood supply from the placenta passes to the
other twin causing problems for both babies. After four weeks of weekly scans and constant fear of losing
our babies, Kings told us that all was looking good and we would only need
fortnightly scans. We were so
relieved and decided to go on a long weekend “babymoon” for some time alone
before our twins arrived. Little
did we know that our babies were about to be born.
On Saturday 30th June at about 3pm my
waters broke and the most terrifying three days of our lives were about to
begin. When we arrived at The
Friarage Hospital in Northallerton we both knew in our hearts that nothing
could be done – although we were both still hoping for a miracle.
We received the most amazing care and
support from the incredible staff at this hospital, but tragically on Monday
2nd July 2012 at 10.40pm, after six hours in labour, our baby girls were born
together and never took a breath.
We were able to hold them, name them and spend time with them. They were perfect in every way but just
so incredibly small. The following
morning when the girls were brought back to our room, the sun came out on a
cloudy day and we said goodbye to our little rays of sunshine.
